Evan & Courtney shaver have been IBCer's for over 20 years. They are passionate about following what Jesus encourages his followers to give. They are all about giving both their time and their money to love and serve Irving Bible Church and the surrounding communities.
After growing up in a Christian household, being immersed in biblical community, and serving and leading within the church, I found myself in a season of not wanting to participate in the "Christian To-Dos". I found it difficult to admit to my mentor and friends not that I just wasn't reading the Bible but that I didn't want to. But then, the more I talked about it, the more I discovered that for many Christians, Bible reading - especially the part of a daily devotional schedule - is one of the bid "shoulds" of faith. Comparison is one of those words that immediately draws up this ugly feeling in our guts, right? We have all felt the rush of dissatisfaction with our own stories when we set them down next to someone else’s only to find them doing “better than” or maybe just “better off.” Whether it is a co-worker, a mentor, an influencer on social media, or even a dear friend that appears to be closer to where we want to be, or who we want to be, we have undoubtedly felt envy, pride, covetousness, and self-pity in the wake of Comparison.
